This animation illustrates the function of a potassium ion channel, a vital membrane protein that selectively allows potassium ions to pass through the cell membrane. By maintaining the proper flow of ions, these channels regulate the cell’s electrical balance, supporting critical processes such as nerve signalling, muscle contraction, and cellular homeostasis.
